Discover your skin type

Let's be honest, choosing a skincare product is quite difficult. The huge range of products that all seem the same doesn't make it any easier for us. We would like to help you on your way.

The first step to your right skin routine is understanding your skin type. There are four different indicators that can help you figure out your skin type: whether your skin is dry or oily, sensitive or resistant, pigmented or non-pigmented, and wrinkled or tight.

This blog explains the different skin types and provides tips for proper care, based on scientific research.

1. Dry vs. oily skin

Dry skin
Dry skin does not produce enough sebum. This can affect the natural skin barrier and cause flakiness and a rough texture of the skin. People with dry skin often suffer from irritation and are therefore more susceptible to conditions such as eczema.

Here's what you can do:

  • Hydrate : Keep your skin well hydrated with moisturizers .
  • Avoid irritation : Use mild, fragrance-free products to prevent further drying and irritation. For example, take a look at our SMPL products. These products are fragrance-free and therefore extra suitable for dry, sensitive skin.

Oily skin
Oily skin is characterized by excessive sebum production, which can lead to a shiny appearance and an increased risk of acne and more visible pores. Here’s what you can do:

  • Control sebum : Incorporate ingredients like salicylic acid and retinoids into your routine to regulate sebum.
  • Choose wisely : Use non-comedogenic products. This means that the products do not clog your pores. This is often indicated with a label on the products.

2. Sensitive vs. Resistant Skin

Sensitive skin
Sensitive skin is prone to reactions to environmental factors or products, resulting in redness, itching or burning. Here's what you can do:

  • Be gentle : Use hypoallergenic and fragrance-free products that are specifically formulated for sensitive skin. For example, check out the products from Nature Bar . Many of their soap bars are extra effective for sensitive skin.

Resistant skin
A resistant skin can handle a wider range of products and environmental conditions without negative effects. Here’s what you can do:

  • Regular Care : Maintain a consistent routine to prevent problems such as dehydration.
  • Build up active ingredients carefully : Add active ingredients slowly to avoid overstimulation.

3. Pigmented vs. Non-pigmented skin

Pigmented skin
Pigmented skin has increased melanin production, which can lead to hyperpigmentation. These are darker spots on your skin. Here's what you can do:

  • Sun Protection : Use a broad spectrum sunscreen daily. This means that you should look for a sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. This is always indicated on the packaging.
  • Brightening Ingredients : Incorporate Vitamin C , hydroquinone or retinoids to even out skin tone.

Non-pigmented skin
Non-pigmented skin has less melanin, the pigment that gives the skin color, which can make it more sensitive to the sun. Here's what you can do:

  • Sun Protection : Regular use of sunscreen is essential. Find Uncovered. Cosmetics sunscreens here .
  • Strengthen the barrier : Use mild products that support the skin's natural barrier.

4. Wrinkled vs. Tight Skin

Wrinkled skin
Wrinkled skin shows signs of aging such as fine lines and sagging. While this is a natural part of aging, there are certain products you can add to your routine to keep your skin fresh and healthy.

  • Anti-aging products : Products with retinoids and peptides stimulate the production of collagen. Collagen is a protein that keeps your skin firm and elastic. Products with hyaluronic acid ensure that the skin remains hydrated.
  • Protection : Moisturize and use sunscreen to keep your skin healthy.

Tight skin
A wrinkle-free skin looks a bit firmer. Here's what you can do:

  • Go for healthy skin aging : Use sunscreen, moisturizers and antioxidants to keep skin healthy.

Understanding your skin type will help you choose the most appropriate products and treatments to support and improve your skin.
